Golfing in Cambodia

Cambodia today offers most of luxurious services for international travelers. One of them is golfing with several golf courses, concentrated in two biggest cities: the capital Phnom Penh and Siem Reap city, where owning priceless ancient Angkor temples.

Cambodia’s first golf course is Cambodia Golf & Country Club was built in 1996 located 35 km from Phnom Penh, in the neibor Kompong Speu province and this still is the top choice here for the amateur golfer. The course owns 18 hole, par 72 and total 7.077 yards. At Phnom Penh, only 15km from the center of the city is anothor Royal Phnom Penh Golf Club, built in 1999 with 18 holes, par 72 and total 7.079 yards. However, this field is managed fairly weak and do not be repaired, leading to degradation of maintenance and service is not so good. The capital also has Grand Phnom Penh Golf Club recently completed nine holes, the other half will be completed late in 2011, but this field is not for tourists but for registered members and thier guests. When completed, Grand Phnom Penh Golf Club will have 18 holes, par 72, over 7,000 yards.

Siem Reap has 3 golf courses now. First, Sofitel Phokeethra Country Club built in 2007. This is part of the 5-star hotel Sofitel Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort. This golf course has 18 holes, par 72, total 7.224 yards. Here, service is utmost care and of course it can satisfy most amateur golfers. This is Cambodia’s first golf course with international standard and also the host of the Asian PGA tournament – Cambodian Open. New and more professional is Angkor Golf Resort, one of the works by the legendary Nick Faldo, constructed and inaugurated in 2008. This yard also includes 18 holes, par 72 and total 7.279 yards. Since its inception, this place becames the hot spot for golfers in Asia and Cambodia, with many amateur semi-professional tournaments took place. Currently this field is considered one of the best golf courses in Asia. Siem Reap also has a newer Siem Reap Lake Resort Golf Club, opened in 2009. The service is very good and also comes with lots of gadgets to relax after competition on the yards. This course has 18 hole, par 72, and total 7.396 yards.

In addition, there are many projects currently being implemented or are calling for investment, namely:

In Phnom Penh: Vattanac Golf Resort. More of the same design of Sir Nick Faldo following the success of the Angkor Golf Resort. This double 18-hole is being built 15km from the center of the capital, scheduled for completion in 2012.

In Siem Reap: Bellus Angkor Golf Resort. By David McLay Kidd implementation, scheduled to open in 2012.

In Kampot: Bokor Mountain Golf & Country Club is part of a ambitious super-project Bokor Mountain Resort, to turn this area into a wilderness “Genting Highland of Cambodia.” double 18-hole course is under construction and can certainly opened a half in 2012. Also in this province, there is another project Kampot Golf Course & Marina, closes to the Gulf of Thailand and this project is calling for investment.

In Sihanoukville: project of Ochheuteal Beach Golf Course has started since 2005 but have so far stalled. Right now, this famous coastal city does not has any golf course.

There is also a joint project between Vietnam and Cambodia named Cambodia Vietnam Friendship Golf Resort, is to be entended to build near the Vietnam border in Svay Rieng province. But still do not know when this project is deployed.
